About Me

I work in IT and embedded systems. I have been self-employed since 2005 and am VAT-registered. I value long-term working relationships — I have worked with some of my clients for more than twenty years — but I am equally happy to take on one-off projects.

My scope overlaps with and extends beyond the roles of sysadmin, network specialist, developer, and embedded and IoT systems designer. Activities I engage in regularly and repeatedly include:

• designing and bringing up an electronics board (KiCAD, rework);
• developing and debugging firmware (STM32, Microchip/Atmel, C, assembler);
• creating a custom-tailored Linux distribution and maintaining it (Yocto, RAUC);
• installing and administering Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat, and others on servers;
• programming back-end solutions (Python, PostgreSQL, sqlite3, docker);
• designing and implementing network protocols (Python, C);
• all of the above while adhering to the principles of security, reliability, and discretion.

Over the years I have found that the highest value of my work lies in my ability to navigate many different fields. For example:

• A network specialist rarely knows how to program. As a result, they sometimes work inefficiently, performing tasks manually, slowly, and with a risk of errors. It would serve them well to be able to automate tasks and integrate systems — for instance, pulling data from a business system and using it to configure network devices or firewalls.
• A programmer does not have an in-depth understanding of networking technologies and protocols. When writing a network application, they may not foresee security risks and handle them properly.
• A person who is well versed in both fields can provide consulting or write software themselves that makes life easier for network engineers while also being secure, portable, and designed with the environment in which it is used in mind.
• That person is me.

Experience has taught me to avoid over-specialisation. Several times in my career I have become a specialist with detailed knowledge of certain technologies and products — such as Cisco MARS or Cisco IPS — only to soon watch the vendor discontinue their development.

I continuously and gladly learn new things and strive to pass knowledge on to younger colleagues. When working on a larger project, I make a point of documenting the procedures carried out.

I speak Czech (native speaker) and English.

I care about typography and strive to write well. If I use an em dash — and I like doing so — it does not necessarily mean that the text was written by AI. The reality is that I wrote all the Czech-language text on this website myself, while the English translations were produced with the help of AI.
